Why I Love Anime: Letter A
Posted by himitsu on 15 Jan 2009 at 11:10 pm | Tagged as: I Love Anime
No direct answer to the common question of “why do you enjoy anime?”. If an anime fan thinks deeply into it, it’s a rather silly question. It’s like asking someone; “do you enjoy TV? Movies? How about music?”. The only possible downfall is the form of media. You might not like the strange big eyes on anime character or how their mouths can be so huge! Perhaps you don’t like japanese culture? But all in all, I think anyone could enjoy anime if they find the “right” one (I also feel this way when it comes to reading novels, but that’s a whole different story). The best answer I can give to why I love anime is that it has such varying genres, satisfying many moods I have. They can bring you the best storylines, aesthetics, or the silliest ones. Also, I’ve had many laughs. It’s all around fun.
So. From A-Z I will be providing blurbs of the interesting parts of various anime. Starting from the Letter A (but of course!). It will feature anime worth mentioning, or whichever anime I have screenshots for on this computer :I
I talk too much- get to it!

A Cheeky Angel
Also titled Tenshi na Konamaiki. Megumi is the most beautiful girl in a lot of boys’ eyes. However, Megumi was not a girl her whole life. The transformation began when Megumi was 10 years old. A mysterious book which opened up an equally mysterious jester granted any wish Megumi had. Megumi wished to be the strongest and have the most powerful influence over all men. His wish was granted, Megumi was strong against the men alright, by having all males weaken in her presence. This anime portrays Megumi’s life at school and how she deals with bullies or “romances”. In fact, she pummels a school bully named Ichiro, and he somehow falls in love with her. There’s parts of them trying to find the magical book to bring Megumi back to a boy, but that’s very minimal. It’s mostly comedy and fighting.

Ai Shite Night
The alternative title is “Love in Rock n’ Roll”, so it has to be good! It’s a drama filled romance about 18-year-old Yaeko. On an errand for ingredients, she encounters a young boy named Hashizo and his cat (named Juliano). They’re lost and hungry. Yaeko is a kind and honest girl, she feels sorry for the two and befriends them. That same day, she bumps into Hashizo’s brother, Go, who is a guitarist and song writer for his University band “Bee Hive”. He’s apparently popular with the ladies but all the old fogies scour at the “punks”. Sooo… it’s about love, friendship, drama, trust, la la la.

Air Gear
Air Treks (ATs) are badass rollerskates that give way to high speeds in response to your movements Itsuki is a guy that is new to Air Treks. He lives with these hawt girls whom are sisters. He sneaks into a room one day and finds the inline skates- of course going around and causing trouble. He attracts the attention of other AT users because the ones he’s wearing are rare and represent a powerful group. He is then challeged to a race. This anime has very awesome music and nice competitive feel. It has a very “cool” feel. You get some fanservice too, you might get annoyed at a little raven thing though.

Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka
A very cute girl transfers to Junichi’s school and gets loads of attention. Espcially since Junichi and the girl (named Yuuhi) are suspected to have a relationship. You see, before Yuuhi’s day of transfer, Junichi was able to fend off two suspicious males that were troubling Yuuhi. As new classmates continue to prod her, Yuuhi pleads for Junichi to clear up the misunderstandings. Junichi is confused on what to do and ends up kissing her. Yup, that cleared things up.
The first episode ends with Yuuhi showing up at Junichi’s door claiming that she is now Junichi’s wife. Logical sense aside. She is to live with Junichi and her family is to judge his quality as a husband. Yay. Another excuse for many pretty girls to live under a normal guy’s roof. I hear things get ridiculous in this anime. Or stupid. Look below.

Akikan!
An anime where soda cans transform into beautiful girls. You see them transform by drinking out of the pop can. Not only that, each time your lips touch the the rim to drink, the human form kisses you. There’s a government organization called Akikan where random soda cans change to pwetty girls (spelling error intended). Kakeru is one of the lucky guys that happens to purchse a Melon Soda. After all the crumble-bumble, he names the girl Melon (aww). The government must be up to something, because these soda ladies seem to possess supernatural powers. Melon (the girl) seems to blast powerful carbonate gas at you. Watch out!

Alfred J. Quack
It’s about a young duck that lost his siblings and parents in an accident. He is then adopted by by his father’s friend, Hank (who is a mole). They embark on many adventures and help others along the way. This is more or less a show for youngin’s, though it apparently covers historical events like World War II.

Angelic Layer
Battle of figurines! There is a well-known competition of “Angels” deemed Angelic Layer. You purchase an Angel, name it, select its combat type then fight other Angels through the mind. You follow Misaki as she is firstly introduced to Angelic Layer as she transfers to Tokyo. She ends up being an incredible match in Angelic Layer. The battles in this series are quite cool. It’s made from CLAMP so you’ll have a nice blend of comedy and drama. Misaki names her doll Hikaru (which seems to be a reference to another CLAMP work Magic Knight Rayearth). The romance is cute and tingly as well :3

Aria the Origination
Purely slice-of-life. Aria the Origination is the third season of Aria the Animation. You follow the lives of several girls that are Undines (those that control gondolas for tours). Akari is just starting out as an undine and is looked after by Alicia (remarkably, all these girls have a name starting with the letter “A”). It’s very scenic and tranquil. The setting is on the Planet Aqua which is covered by vast water. A water city, if you will, of Neo Venezia.

Asagiri no Miko
English title is Shrine of the Morning Mist which leaves a mystifying feel (the DVD boxset compliments this feeling), whereas this anime is anything but! The comedy is pretty hilarious, and there aren’t many serious moments. This anime sort of parodies Sailormoon in some scenes, which is pretty funny. Each shrine maiden has a specific power. The story starts with Yuzu, the main character, looking forward to the arrival of her childhood friend, Tadahiro. She discovers that Tadahiro attracts demons and is always in grave danger. Tadahiro has dichromonous eyes (two different coloured eyes) and his left eye is marked as evil. In solution to this, Yuzu starts gathering other girls to train as miko’s- to exorcize the demons that threaten Tadahiro’s life. A wonderful gesture, a group of girls warding off demons for an unlucky boy. More like a kick in the manly ego :D

Asatte no Houkou
Shouko and Karada are two girls that are tired of their state of life. Shouko feels she shoulders too much drama and responsibility and wishes she were a child again. Karada is a young girl that hopes everyone would stop treating her as a child. They both pay a visit to a small shrine. Shouko returns back to the shrine one day to be face-to-face with Karada and the transformation begins. Shouko finds herself in the body of a child and Karada grows into the age of an adult. Asatte no Houkou (A Direction of the Day after Tomorrow) is largely slice-of-life. There is very little humour. It’s chuckle-worthy to see the two try to live normally in their new reality. But the execution does not go out of line or silly. The mood is very calm and relaxing.

Asu no Yoichi!
Yoichi has been living with his father in the mountains his whole life. His father, a skilled swordsman has been training Yoichi extensively. In fact, Yoichi has become a superior samurai and even surpasses his fathers’ skill. Not willing to admit it, Yoichi’s father sends him to live in the busy city to gain “life experiences” and to further train in another dojo. Yoichi ends up with four beautiful sisters. Of course, he manages to find trouble before he gets there. He gets misunderstood as a molester, crazy person, rebel, and otaku (one could say that these identities are synonyms) . What’s more is that he has yet to know the strength of the sisters.

Attacker You!
Volleyball! Yuu is a wild girl that transfers to Tokyo. She hasn’t been with her father for years. That’s not all, upon a new life in Tokyo, she is welcomed with a new younger brother! Sunny is as energetic as Yuu is. He follows Yuu to her new school. There, Yuu meets new friends and rivals. Nami is a girl on the volleyball team and takes great pride in her skills. After some rift-raft, Nami challenges Yuu to a volleyball mini-game where she will give her most powerful serves. She’s confident that Yuu won’t return any. An older, more “classic” anime that focuses on the competition, skills, and techniques in Volleyball.

Ayakashi
Yuu (hey, another person named Yuu) is a guy with supernatural abilities. Unfortunately, he is still a novice in controlling it. Yuu only uses it to perform tricks and gain petty money. Yuu lost all motive to live life to the fullest when he lost his childhood friend. He encounters the psychotic school bully named Sanada where Sanada shows Yuu the true way of using your powers. Sanada severs the nose off a stranger with just a swift of a hand. Sanada walks closer to Yuu and Yuu waits for his death, however, life still awaits. When he opens his eyes, he sees a mysterious but overpowering girl.
The supernatural powers within this anime are parasitic. In exchange for special abilities, the parasites consume your life force. But that’s not the only threat you face. You face the danger of other individuals whom risk their life to be more powerful than anyone.
